Possibly Alan's most accomplished series outside of FROM HELL, PROMETHEA looks on the surface like a mischievous take on WONDER WOMAN, but although humour abounds in the news flashes and Weeping Gorilla billboards, nothing could be further from the truth. This is a poetical treatise on Moore's personal beliefs - on the immortality of the moment and the power of the imagination.

Sophie Bangs has become the latest incarnation of Promethea, herself a work of fiction, and on the road to bringing about the most unusual Armageddon she journeys with former Promethea and now dead mentor, Barabara, through the realms of the Immateria. As they wander and converse, they begin to understand how the different spheres' individual qualities apply to their inner life, until they reach the very pinnacle of enlightenment.

Now, I have the lowest psychobabble threshold in the world, but I promise you this all makes sense, and credit this must go to JH Williams III for his own acts of magic, consistently both illustrating and illuminating Moore's difficult and complex thesis to the point at which it can be understood and absorbed without making it feel like a chore. For proof of the ingenuity at work, ask one of us to show you the Infinity Loop double-page spread, for a journey of sheer delight along a Möbius Strip, where Barbara and Sophie can hear themselves at different times of their conversation.
